Wheat Sprouts Under the Snow
Nov 2026. Double Choir SATB/SATB a cappella / 5:15
I came across an old adage about winter wheat: “Wheat sprouts under the snow.” The idea is that what may appear absent is merely dormant, gathering strength, awaiting the spring. To me this perfectly described the moment we are living in as a people.
I found and adapted additional text from Rumi:
What we leave in the earth
will rise in another season.
What we give away
will become bread.
What we sing
will become another voice.
I then wrote the rest of the text including the lyrical line:
Precious as seeds in furrowed fields
We carry tomorrow inside us.
Note: There is no further divisi in any of the choral parts.
For high school, community, university, or professional chorus.

Wheat Sprouts Under the Snow by Dave Froman
What we leave in the earth
will rise in another season.
What we give away
will become bread.
What we sing
will become another voice.
A shower of luminescence
The fertile grain grows
Listen to the sound of birdsong
Fluting in the morning air
Floating up above a meadow green and gold.
We wrap our arms around each other.
We enter the circle.
We lift our voices
Radiant music
We hold our heads up high
Precious as seeds in furrowed fields
We carry tomorrow inside us.
Wheat sprouts under the snow.
Let there be hope
In the spirit
Let there be hope
In the multitudes of light.
Existence is a free gift from the sun.
What we sing
will become another voice.
What we sing.
