It’s Inside of Me!

2023. Two-part treble chorus with piano and percussion. 2:45

A high-energy, joyful explosion of youthful creativity. Built on a bright call-and-response framework and setting a poem actually written by a child, this piece features a lively piano part and infectious percussion. It’s perfect for teaching syncopation, crisp diction, and rhythmic independence to a children’s or treble choir while keeping rehearsal energy sky-high.

I found this infectious little item in a book of contemporary poems composed by children selected by Naomi Shihab Nye, creating a ditty of a piece that uses just one repeated rhythm and simple chord progression.  Accompaniment is piano, bongos or conga, and triangle.  There is about 1:20 of music, with a trick/false ending, before it repeats.

A fun middle school piece.

It’s Inside of Me!

The movement of

Rivers is in me.

In my blood.

The smartness of Einstein

Is in me.

In my head.

The stillness of rocks

Is in me.

In my body.

The color of trees

Is in me.

In my skin.

The looseness of dirt

Is in me.

In my bones.

The fastness of rabbits

Is in me.

In my legs.

The seeing of eagles

Is in me.

In my eyes.

The neatness of cats

Is in me.

In my hands.

That is me.
